Just a rough '76 panel peek for you today... and some blabbing.
The rough stage seems to be where I have the most fun, but can also be the most frustrating part of the process. I guess it depends on what kind of drawing day I'm having. Which I can usually file into one of these three categories...
The JIMMY Day:
A day where anything I 'jimmy' down on paper seems to work in my favour... for whatever lovely reason. I love Jimmy days like a bastard... but sadly, everyday can't be a Jimmy day.
The GILBERT Day:
'We're not going anywhere Gilbert, we're not going anywhere...' (from 'What's eating Gilbert Grape'). As you might have guessed, 'Gilbert' days are days that my drawings don't tend to go anywhere... except the trash.
The MILT Day:
I read somewhere that Milt Kahl (one of Disney's 'nine old men') would work at drawing after drawing after drawing until he got exactly what he was looking for.
It didn't matter if one frame of animation took him all day because as soon as he got what he was trying for, the rest of the work came quickly and easily.
Most of my days are Milts.
Some days can start out as Gilberts but make their way to Milts...
I like Milt days because when you finally get the drawing right, it can be like that first ray of sunshine peeking through the clouds after a rough storm.
Anywhoo, if you're out there drawing... I hope you're having one heck of a Jimmy day!
